Wallflower | Marginalia Patch

Regular price $35.00 $0.00

A whimsical and storied patch for your backpack, jacket, or anywhere else you might want wearable, hand-made art. This patch is hand-embroidered on two layers of felt, with the option to sew or iron-on. Approximately 2 x 5.5 inches.

(Please keep in mind that your patch might have slight differences from the one pictured here, because: art, and also because: hand-made.)

I absolutely love illuminated manuscripts and have spent many hours deep-diving into digital copies, just to bathe in the gorgeous calligraphy and odd little doodles in the margins. I also love the colors: rich, jewel-toned greens, gold, blue. Many of these manuscripts were religious texts being hand-copied by monks, and I don’t know if it was out of boredom that they doodled miniature illustrations in the margins, or out of a desire to turn the text into their own personalized art piece. Whatever their reasons, those doodles, or marginalia, are by turns beautiful, snarky, whimsical, or even obscene (apparently men have loved penises and fart jokes for millennia).

The monk who copied The Rutland Psalter around 1260 AD was clearly obsessed with dragons. Flip through the pages and you’ll find countless versions. Dragons belching arrows, dragons kicking up their heels, dragons with monkey heads, dragons biting various parts of their own bodies. It seemed a shame to me that these dragons are hidden away in an ancient manuscript, and so this series of Marginalia Patches was born.
